Juneteenth

Juneteenth is right around the corner and we know while it’s an important day, it can be hard knowing just how to celebrate and honor it accordingly.

We’ll start with the basics. What is Juneteenth? Juneteenth is a celebration of the day slaves were emancipated from slavery after the Civil War in 1865, under the 1862 emancipation proclamation in Texas. (Want even more history? Visit our previous post on Juneteenth!) On this day, we all celebrate resisting prejudice, alienation, and unjust treatment by all. It’s a celebration of freedom, joy, and pride. Celebrating on June 19th can involve anything or anyone — all are welcome to participate in the celebration of freedom.

On Hilton Head Island, there are a lot of activities where you and everyone else can celebrate Juneteenth. Here’s a list of the upcoming festivities you can take place in.

  • June 15th- 3rd Annual Juneteenth Campout With Joseph McGill At Historic Mitchelville

  • June 16th- Juneteenth Drum Circle at Historic Mitchelville

  • June 17th- 8th Annual Bluffton Juneteenth Celebration

In Savannah, there are also events to participate in.

  • June 15th- Juneteenth Lecture by Queen Quet

  • June 17th- Juneteenth Fine Arts Festival

  • June 19th- Peace Love Juneteenth

These events are filled with fun, celebration, and most importantly, freedom! They allow the community to come together and celebrate as one without marginalizing, judgement, or bigotry. This day is more than history, it still stands to be our present. That day will forever represent a change that not only bettered the lives for people of color, but for the new generations to come. So while we celebrate, lets remember that while it is part of history, its a part that still benefits everyone today.
