Annual Blues & BBQ

Are you ready to enjoy blues music and eat barbeque for a worthy cause?

It’s almost time for the Annual Blues & BBQ Event at Mitchelville Freedom Park! Enjoy sensational live blues music and award-winning cuisine on April 6 from 12-3 pm, all in the name of raising money for the non-profit organization, Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park, a 501c3 organization dedicated to preserving the land’s rich history and cultural significance.

Did you know Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park is where freedom began? It was the first self-governing town of formerly enslaved people dating back to 1862.  With formal commerce, education, and a robust economic system of its own during the late 1800’s, Historic Mitchelville was the first town in the United States to grant freedom to former slaves.  For this reason, it’s historic and deeply revered as the birthplace of Black freedom.

Today, the Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park provides a window into what this thriving town formed of former slaves once looked like.  Rich artifacts and re-created scenes are on display. Self-guided and guided tours are available in this interactive, educational, multi-acre site on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. It’s current celebration of existence tells the authentic story in a tremendously beautiful setting.

The future master plan of Historic Mitchelville includes a 18,000 square foot visitors center, an event lawn, 8-10 reconstructed houses designed to represent the cluster of homes in Mitchelville in the 1800’s, and more designed to attract visitors from all over the country.  For more on the future master plan and how you can support the growth dedicated to bringing tourism to the North End of Hilton Head Island and support the Gullah-Geechee community, please visit: https://exploremitchelville.org/about-us/#park-plan
